The Man in the Iron Mask: Handsome retelling of the reliable Alexander Dumas story of a guy unreasonably imprisoned and encased in an iron mask-since his extremely presence bullies the reigning baron of France, the youthful, self-centered Louis XIV. The destiny of both are eventually in the hands of the aging although still enthusiastic Musketeers. It could be difficult to miss with that cast; the film is relatively enjoyable, however it does go on too long. Cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Jeremy Irons, John Malkovich, Gerard Depardieu, Peter Sarsgaard, and Hugh Laurie. (132 minutes, 1998)
Dragnet: Aykroyd is a joke rebirth of Jack Webb, playing Sgt. Joe Friday’s thick although committed nephew in this burlesque. Hank is fun as his freewheeling new companion, with Morgan, Webb’s onetime companion, now advertised to commander of the LAPD. Starts out relatively ludicrous then goes flat. However, the punch line is a screech. Aykroyd co-scripted this movie with Mankiewicz and Alan Zweibel. Cast includes Dan Aykroyd, Tom Hanks, Christopher Plummer, Harry Morgan, Alexandra Paul, Jack Halloran, Elizabeth Ashley, and Dabney Coleman. (106 minutes, 1987)
The Return to Flint: Arsenic-soaked film of a misanthropic that fancies himself a woman-serial killer and plans to show his impressionable adolescent nephew around N.Y.C. Scott’s performance is a journey de force from his first minute on-monitor, and he’s in fine company with his self-promised girl costars. R Cast includes Campbell Scott, Jesse Eisenberg, Isabella Rossellini, Elizabeth Berkley, Jennifer Beals, Ben Shenkman, Mina Badie, and Chris Pile. (104 minutes, 2002)
Bullets or Ballots: Cop Robinson makes believe to leave patrol force to fracture citywide mob ring run by MacLane. Here is a good mobster movie. Cast includes Edward G. Robinson, Joan Blondell, Barton.MacLane, and Humphrey Bogart. (81 minutes, 1936)
Rich and Strange: Kendall and Barry, wedded and uninterested are given money and voyage around the planet; he has event with a “princess,” when she gets to be romantically affixed to an explorer. Cast includes Henry Kendall, Joan Barry, Betty Amann, Percy Marmont, and Elsie Randolph. (83 minutes, 1932)
Follow the Boys: Dumb comedy un- spiked by Francis’ harmonizing or pranks a~ quartet of gals pursue around the French Riviera desiring spouses. Cast includes Connie Francis, Paula Prentiss, Ron Randell, Janis Paige, Russ Tamblyn, and Danny Robin. (99 minutes, 1963)
Pet Sematary: The Creed family has moved to a nice country village. When their cat is hit by a car and killed, one of the local neighbors shows them an isolated place behind the pet cemetery to bury the cat. A few days later the cat is back, but wild and aggressive. When their son dies from a fatal accident, they choose the same place to bury his body, hoping he will come back o life. They will get more than they bargained for.
Repossessed: Here’s a fashion spoof of The Exorcist, with Blair herself as a housewife acquired anew by the identical demon she was purge of as a kid. Too few gags, too numerous targets, and a meager finale make this film weak. Blair and Nielsen as the exorcist are good. Cast includes Linda Blair, Ned Beatty, Leslie Nielsen, Anthony Starke, Lana Schwab, and Thorn J. Acute. (84 minutes, 1990)
