Dreamweaver Cs3 And Cascading Style Sheets

December 28th, 2007
by Andrew Whiteman

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is a W3C standard mark-up language for defining the appearance of web pages. The use of CSS allows developers to fully separate the content of the page from its presentation, speeding up the development process and also making the pages load more quickly in the browser. Whereas 20th century websites typically used tables to construct web pages and position elements, CSS now provides a cleaner and more efficient way of controlling all aspects of web page layout.

Adobe Dreamweaver is a very widely used platform for developing web sites and web content and, although used by experienced developers, is also widely used by non-specialists for whom Dreamweaver’s user-friendly visual interface takes the pain out of web site creation. The way in which Dreamweaver implements CSS is very important for the casual user, since it will influence the kind of sites they end up producing.

Previous versions of Dreamweaver assumed that most users would be using tables to control the layout of their web pages. Dreamweaver CS3 is the first version of the program which encourages users to create CSS-based web page layouts. When the users create a new web page, they are offered a series of CSS layouts, on which they can base the new page, consisting of single, double and three column designs.

Pages created using CSS rely heavily on the use of the HTML DIV element, a multipurpose container of web content. Choosing one of the Dreamweaver CSS presets creates a page containing a series of DIV elements complete with placeholder text and the CSS code necessary to control the position and dimension of the DIVs. The placeholder text and HTML code both contain brief explanations of the techniques used and advice on how to customise these basic pages for your own purposes.

The CSS code for pages created using Dreamweaver’s preset layouts is embedded in the page itself. If a user creates a series of such pages, each one will have its own CSS code making updating very time-consuming. It is far more efficient to have all of the CSS code in one external file and link each page to this one file. At present, Dreamweaver doesn’t really make this clear to new users. However, it does have an excellent feature for moving embedded CSS code into an external file. You simply select all of the CSS definitions you wish to externalise then choose Text - CSS Styles - Move CSS Rules.

Although this ability to move CSS around is really great, it’s not something that beginners will necessarily think of doing. It points to the fact that Dreamweaver could still do with a few enhancements to its implementation of CSS.

Another area where Dreamweaver still handles CSS inefficiently is the way in which it generates CSS class styles with names like “style1″, “style2″, etc. whenever the user applies attributes like font, size or colour to highlighted text. This must be really confusing for beginners and can easily be solved by simply removing these “raw” attributes and replacing them with CSS-friendly options.

Quarkxpress, Very Much Alive But For How Much Longer

December 20th, 2007
by Andrew Whiteman

QuarkXPress, for so long the dominant force in the page layout arena, now finds itself fighting for survival and under attach by four products all created by Adobe, who look like achieving the same kind of dominance in the creative market that Microsoft have achieved in the general computing market.

The huge advantage that Adobe has in this battle of the DTP giants is that most users and potential users of QuarkXPress will also be users of one or more members of the Adobe Creative Suite: Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat. Every time the question of upgrades comes around, there will always be the option, for such users, of upgrading one of their Adobe products to the Adobe Creative Suite rather than just upgrading to the latest version of QuarkXPress.

Quark’s rather complacent attitude in the late nineties and early noughties contributed significantly to the shift from QuarkXPress to InDesign. For numerous years QuarkXPress dominated the market. It was the automatic choice for anyone creating publications which were to be professionally printed and there was more than a touch of complacency in their attitude. Upgrades were slow in coming and the product cost the earth.

Users of page layout programs look like being the main beneficiaries of the rivalry between InDesign and QuarkXPress. The release of upgrades to QuarkXPress has greatly accelerated in the last few years, with version 8 not far away and each release now bringing genuinely improved functionality.

Several of the new features in QuarkXPress 7 indicate that Quark are now fully awake to the threat posed by InDesign and are responding to it. QuarkXPress 7 allows the import of native Photoshop files (.psd) and has a special PSD Import palette containing options for manipulating imported Photoshop documents. Users can change the opacity and blend modes of the original Photoshop layers and work with alpha and spot colour channels.

So, what does the future hold for QuarXPress? Well, whilst it now appears that most design professionals see InDesign as the future of page layout, it’s important to remember that not all users of QuarkXPress are designers. A lot of corporations now buy QuarkXPress for producing in-house publications. So, in the future, we may see different flavours of the program emerging aimed at different types of user.

All the unwanted files are thrown away to free up more space. The best part is that a good registry repair tool knows exactly which kind of files you need and which ones are simply thrash.

As a hierarchical information center that controls the daily activities of your computer, the Windows registry has to grow from time to time. It keeps track of your online activities, such as downloading movies and songs. As the days go by, your registry system will get stuffed with invalid entries, thus making it less optimized and your computer’s speed will be greatly affected by this.

A simple click is all is needed to activate a good registry repair tool. You can search and download it from the net by searching for words like ‘registry repair tool’, ‘windows registry checker’, ‘download registry scan’, etc. An initial scan will reveal the major errors in your system. You will then need to make a small purchase in order to safely delete these files and boost your PC performance.

An important feature of an effective registry repair tool is that it does a thorough scan of your Windows registry and provides a detailed report of where the errors are located. A good registry repair tool will also create a system restore point, which is a backup of files that were removed in the fixing process.

PC Anti Spyware and Spyware blockers there importance

December 8th, 2007
by John Maier

Anti Spyware and Spyware blockers are needed for PC systems for any person that wants to connect to the internet to access information. Most of us PC owners now know about software called Spyware that gets install on computer systems by surfing the internet and some of you have Anti Spyware and Spyware blockers installed but how protected are you from these types of software? In most cases if you are running Windows XP or Vista you do have some protection from Windows defender which is now part of the operating system however this software only provides a limited amount of protection. It could be that you also got software with your PC or purchased some Anti Spyware with spyware blocker but how effective is this software now.

To start lets go over and review what spyware software is and how anti spyware and spyware blockers are needed to protect you personal information along with computer. Adware some times called “Malware” are Spyware these are programs designed by marketers and publishers that are designed to snoop you online browser activities to see what you search for and purchase and then they send you back “Pop-Up” ads most of the time. However as this software runs it ties up your computers processes along with uses the resources on your PC it will cause system related issues from slowing down the response time to causing problems with the internet browser and even cause the PC to crash. As more of it loads your PC will get slower and slower and have more issues and the spyware will try to go out and contact the host site as well as sometimes Hijack your browser to take you to site that you normally might not visit and because it is using you network connection it also cause heavy traffic across the network that comes from you PC.

The number one threat to you computer has rapidly become Spyware and Adware viruses with over 87% of PCs already infected. Included in this list are Trojans, Popup Ads, Worms and Web bugs, Web worms, Monitoring software and more. Some of these software programs are designed to monitor and record your online acts including your credit card numbers and bank account numbers along with other personal information which can lead to a worse possibly identity theft. As you use the internet like many people do these days then there is a good chance your computer is infected with these types of files or will be since this happens by simply surfing the web or downloading files or music and even by reading your email all without you noticing. As and IT professional I have seen many cases of this the worst had to be one client with over 400 programs running actively in the back ground. These types or programs like to hide and run in the back ground where you normally would not see them unless they actually cause a Popup ad.

Current Anti Spyware and blockers currently combat against these types of software because of these newer versions of Spyware software are even worse and more capable of evading detection. These spyware threats are better than the software from a few months ago. The current Anti Spyware and Spyware blocker software may no longer be as effective at protection against spyware or blocking spyware as it was in the past.

Fortunately there are newer Spyware and Adware virus removal tools available that help combat against these newer forms of Spyware software and help block spyware. Sorting through them all to find the right one is a challenging task and an important decision to make. The best solution is to install the newer version Anti-Spyware that includes blocking spyware this software which not only will remove any program that might get installed but also is a blocks spyware these types of software from even getting installed. Watch for compatibility since there are many types of software that does not run properly on Vista or other operating systems. But even with this Spyware is still a real issue and can get installed on your computer system. Be aware of what you are accepting and clicking on since some sites will install these kinds of programs on your computer when you go to that site or accept their software or downloads.
