Some Good Picks For Your Next Movie Download
March 20th, 2010There have been so many movies made over the last century that it can be hard to choose titles for your movie downloads. New films seem to appear daily, crowding out older ones. However, there are many movies that remain true classics but are often overlooked.
In 1958, the film “A Night to Remember” was released, and it may be the most authentic account regarding the Titanic sinking. It featured a large cast, but probably the best known to American audiences were Honor Blackman, Kenneth More, and David McCallum. At the time it was written, there were many survivors still living, and extensive interviews were conducted, providing many details about the night.
Among the many films that John Wayne appeared in, some were bad, some mediocre, and some were excellent. In the latter category is “Stagecoach”, which really launched his career. Better performances are often considered to have been “The Quiet Man”, “The Shootist”, “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance”, “The Sands of Iwo Jima” and “The Searchers”. His 1954 movie, “The High and the Mighty” is one that was seldom shown for several decades. It is set aboard a flight from Hawaii bound for California that encounters problems halfway there. It was the original disaster type film and offered a large ensemble cast.
If you prefer to combine your romance with comedy, check out “Pride and Prejudice” with Greer Garson as the prejudiced one and Laurence Olivier as the proud one. It is based on a novel by Jane Austen, and is a period piece of parents seeking husbands for five daughters. “The Philadelphia Story” serves up Katherine Hepburn as a blue-blood about to remarry. Cary Grant, as the ex-husband, arranges for reporter Jimmy Stewart to cover the ceremony for a disreputable tabloid.
For a good scare, try “The Legend of Hell House” released in 1973. Roddy McDowell stars as a psychic convinced to return to the haunted mansion that he barely escaped from a decade earlier. Or pay another visit to two true horror classics, “Poltergeist” and “The Exorcist”.
Two films that many have not seen are “The Gods Must Be Crazy” and “55 Days at Peking”. The first relates the story of a Bushmen making a journey to throw a bottle off the edge of the world. The bottle, thought to be a gift from the gods when it was dropped from an airplane, has caused nothing but trouble for the tribe. As he attempts to carry out his mission, he encounters some bizarre characters along the way. The second film is about a siege in the capital of China. The delegations of all foreign nations were surrounded and attacked in the Boxer Rebellion. The movie stars Charlton Heston, David Niven, and Ava Gardner.
Good mysteries to consider include “Rebecca”, “Death on the Nile”, “Witness for the Prosecution” and “Murder on the Orient Express.” Or if you want your comedy broad, check out “Hold That Ghost” with Abbott and Costello, Cary Grant in “Bringing up Baby” or one of the Road pictures Hope and Crosby made, such as “Road to Utopia”.
Other titles you might want to consider include “Damn the Defiant!”, “Ice Station Zebra”, “Marty”, “Pork Chop Hill”, and “Command Decision”. Of course, there are thousands of other films that are just as worthy.
