Sullivan’s Travels: Sick of making fluff, film director McCrea plans to do a serious film. Dry and grief mix seamlessly sick this landmark Hollywood satire, which grows more relevant with each passing year. Cast includes Joel McCrea, Veronica Pool, Robert Warwick, William Demarest, Margaret Hayes, Al Bridge, and Franklin Pangborn. (90 minutes,’42)

Frequency: John Sullivan lost his father thirty years ago. He is still affected by the loss. Somehow with the use of his father’s old ham radio, he can communicate with his father, back when his father was still alive. He warns his father of the fire that would kill him. This saves his father but sets off new events that now must be resolved, or John’s mother will die.

South of Heaven West of Hell: Normal Western plot line of redemption pits marshal Yoakam in a battle against his old outlaw gang, led by Bible-toting patriarch Askew. Cast includes Dwight Yoakam, Vince Vaughn, Billy Bob Thornton, Bridget Fonda, Peter Fonda, Paul Reubens, Bud Cort, Bo Hopkins, Matt Clark, Noble Willingham, Scott Wilson, Luke Askew, Michael Jeter, Joe Ely, and Warren Zevon. (127 minutes, 2000)

Rocky V: Rocky has retired from boxing. A brain injury from his last fight makes continuing impossible. He becomes a trainer, and his first pupil, Tommy Gunn, leaves him because he won’t move him up quick enough. After winning the title with another trainer, Tommy wants to fight Rocky to gain respect. Since Rocky isn’t allowed in the ring, they will have to do it as a street fight.

Shadowlands: Based on the story of British author C. S. Lewis the Lion, The Sorcerer and the Closet whose content is of the hard life he had as an Oxford man in the’50s. He is rattled by his meeting with a forthright American poet. The film is knowledgeable and moving, with Hopkins in top form and Winger his match. The other performers are also excellent. This was filmed on location at Oxford. Cast includes Richard Attenborough, Anthony Hopkins, Debra Winger, Edward Hardwick, Michael Denison, Joseph Mazzello, John Wood, Robert Fleming, and Peter Howell. (130 minutes,’93)

Fantastic Invasion of The Planet Earth: Discharged theatrically in 3-D, this movie was pretty much a disaster. A young couple finds themselves caught in a deserted town encircled in a mammoth bubble. The original title, The Bubble, was far less deceiving: there are no foreigners and no “invasion” in fact, and not much enthusiasm, either. Cast includes Filmed in widescreen Space-Vision. Eragon: Eragon is a poor young boy trying to help keep his family fed. When he finds a shiny blue stone he thinks it might bring food to the tables. The stone turns out to be an egg, a dragon egg. Eragon and this dragon were destined to be together. Now they will go on great adventures together.
