The Front Page: The third filming of the Hecht-MacArthur play about a crazy and woolly Chicago newspaperman in the 1920s has barely anything new to offer (with the exception of 4-letter words) although it continues to be an entertaining piece of work. Cast includes Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, Carol Burnett, Susan Sarandon, Vincent Gardenia, David Wayne, Allen Garfield, Austin Pendleton, and Charles Dunning. (105 minutes, 1974)
Macabre: Strange goings on in small town where physician’s youthful daughter mysteriously disappears and a nameless telephone hailer declares that the kid has been buried alive. Cast includes William Prince, Jim Backus, Christine White, and Jacqueline Scott. (73 minutes, 1958)
The Sugarland Express: An amusing tale, based on truth, in regards to a youthful couple escaping to Sugarland, Texas, to recover their child (whom they want back after giving the child up for adoption), and the cops who chase them all the way through Texas. Cast includes Goldie Hawn, Ben Johnson, Michael Sacks, William Atherton, Steve Kanaly, and Louise Latham. (109 minutes, 1974)
Murphy’s Romance: A youthful divorcee (with twelve-year-old child) makes a new start in a little Arizona town, where she’s allured to an older laid-back widowed pharmacist. This movie is an intriguing, carefree comedy written by Irving Ravetch and Harriet Frank, Jr. Cast includes Sally Field, James Garner, Brian Kerwin, Corey Haim, Dennis Burkley, Georgann Johnson, and Charles Aisle. (107 minutes, 1985)
The Hills Run Red: A Civil War Western of stolen payrolls. The movie is badly dubbed and loosely performed. Cast includes Thomas Hunter, Henry Silva, Dan Duryea, and Nando Gazzola. (89 minutes, 1966)
Alfredo Alfredo: An all too normal Italian comedy in regards to a milquetoast who triumphs and weds a seductive female, only to regret the conquest. The lone interest is recognizing Hoffman’s good work in this uncommon setting (with a dubbed voice!). Cast includes Dustin Hoffman, Stefania Sandrelli, Carla Gravina, Clara Colosimo, Daniele Patella, and Duilio Del Prete. (98 minutes, 1972)
Fracture: Hopkins plays a cold, determining gentleman who shoots his spouse once he finds she’s been in bed with an L.A.P.D. lieutenant. However there is no definitive proof, which makes the case a perfect one for partner D.A. Gosling, who’s just getting ready to move on to a cushy job at a high-end law firm. Cast includes Anthony Hopkins, Ryan Gosling, David Stratham, Rosamund Pike, Billy Burke, Fiona Shaw, Bob Gunton, Embeth Davidtz, Cliff Curtis, Xander Berkeley, Josh Starnberg, and Joe Spano. (112 minutes, 2007)
South Ernest Shackleton and the Endurance Expedition: Exceptional record of the fabled 1915 Ernest Shackleton journey to Antarctica and the stranded team’s attempts to stay alive. The tale has been remunerated and emphasized as long as can be remembered, however nothing could top this original, simple account with startlingly transparent footage that looks as if it was shot this morning. (88 minutes, 1919)
MacArthur: An intense look at the legend of the elaborate military chief throughout WW2 and the Korean War. Peck is phenomenal although the film doesn’t hold the punch of Patton. Cast includes Gregory Peck, Dan O’Herlihy, Ed Flanders, Sandy Kenyon, Dick O’Neill, and Craft Fleming. (130 minutes, 1977)
