Chelsea Walls: Impressionistic ode to N.Y.C.’s fabled Chelsea Hotel and the ghosts of tormented creative souls like Bob Dylan who influenced the present inhabitants, from a recently found Midwestern folksinger to a booze-ridden novelist who couldn’t get his act together. Cast includes Kevin Corrigan, Rosario Dawson, Vincent D’Onofrio, Robert Sean Leonard, Kris Kristofferson, Natasha Richardson, Little Jimmy Scott, John Seitz, Uma Thurman, Mark Weber, Tuesday Weld, Steve Zahn, and Christopher Walken. (112 minutes, 2002)

Lantana: An adult story of relations obstructed by monotony, routine, and absence of articulation. LaPaglia plays a cop, whose matrimony has stagnated, leading him to have an affair. In the mean time, he examines the disappearance of a lady whose own matrimony is in danger. The film is beautifully nuanced at every turn. Cast includes Anthony LaLaglia, Geoffrey Hurry, Barbara Hershey, Kerry Armstrong, Rachael Blake, Vince Colosimo, Daniela Farinacci, and Peter Phelps. (121 minutes, 2001)

Rhinoceros: This is the Eugene Ionesco entry into the “Show of the Ludicrous” makes remorseful shift from the stage to the big screen as sales rep Wilder declines to comply by turning into a mess. The entertainers try. Cast includes Nil Mostel, Gene Wilder, Karen Black, Robert Weil, Joe Silver, and Marilyn Chris. (101 minutes, 1974)

The Great Manhunt: Fable of the West is nothing particularly special as McCrea dreams of oil wells, while Donlevy takes his gal. Stanwyck ages to one hundred in her role. Cast includes Barbara Stanwyck, Joel McCrea, Brian Donlevy, Thurston Chamber, K. T. Stevens, and Lucien Littlefield. (90 minutes, 1942)

Seize the Day: Williams is momentous as Tommy Withelm, turning 40 and a failure by any standard, broke, and much in need of finding love. Wiseman and Stiller offer fine aid as his cold hearted dad and a con man he naively believes in. Lots of recognizable faces in tiny roles: Tony Roberts, Richard Shull, John Fiedler, Jo Van Fleet, William Hickey, Eileen Heckart, and numerous others. Cast includes Robin Williams, Joseph Wiseman, Jerry Stiller, and Glenne Headly. (93 minutes, 1986)

The Alannist: An eccentric and choppy black comedy in reference to a novice door to door security alarm salesman (Arquette) who finds that his manager and self-fashioned mentor (Tucci) is a crook. Then the youthful gentleman falls in love with his first client (Capshaw). Cast includes David Arquette, Stanley Tucci, Kate Capshaw, Mary McCormack, Ryan Reynolds, and Tricia Vessey. (93 minutes, 1998)

Stand and Deliver: Olmos gives a powerful performance in this momentous drama as a hard, requesting professor who empowers his East L.A. barrio students to pass an Advanced Placement Calculus Quiz. That’s only the beginning of this tale that is based on a true story. Cast includes Edward James Olmos, Lou Diamond Phillips, Andy Garcia, Can Gotay, and Ingrid Oliu. (105 minutes, 1987)

The Search for One-Eyed Jimmy: The oddball tale of a documentary film maker, just out of college, who returns to his old Brooklyn community and finds cinematic encouragement as his camcorder follows the track of a missing local low life. Cast includes Samuel L. Jackson, Steve Buscemi, Michael Badalucco, Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Anne Meara, Jennifer Beals, Nicholas Turturro, Aida Turturro, Holt McCaIIany, Sam Rockwell, and Tony Sirico. (82 minutes, 1996)

For Love of Ivy: A family desires to keep their servant, so they find her a man to keep her happy. The film is a ho-hum black romance at best. Cast includes Sidney Poitier, Abbey Lincoln, Guy Bridges, Leon Bibb, Nan, Martin, Lauri Peters, and Carroll O’Connor. (102 minutes, 1968)
